Elysia Grose

Queen Elizabeth Scholars in Strengthening Health Systems (2017)

At the time of the QE Scholarship, Elysia was an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program at McMaster University.  Through her extensive experience working in health systems research, as a senior Research Assistant at the McMaster Health Forum’s ForumLab and the Department of Health Services Management at Ryerson University, Elysia developed a keen interest in patient involvement in policy and learning how to incorporate research evidence into decision making.

As an outbound Queen Elizabeth Scholar, Elysia travelled to Selangor, Malaysia to work with a division of the Institute of Health Systems Research in the Ministry of Health.  Her research focused on efforts to reduce maternal mortality in Malaysia as well as behavioral change strategies for obesity. Elysia hoped to use this internship to learn more about the intersections of culture and health.  Moreover, she hoped to use this experience to further her understanding of international health systems and how research evidence can influence policy and system-level interventions.
